disenchanted

I've been feeling disenchanted with the internet of late.

The thing is, I feel that the internet could be, and quite frankly should be, a place where people can get together and share knowledge about how to do things, and make things, and accomplish things.  Where people with similar interests and values can share their dreams and goals and be supported by others.

However, what I find, is quite different.

Groups of people - groups that are suppose to be about building, creating, inventing things - that I find on the internet are full of those who can't or won't try to do something.  If I ask the question on how best to build one small aspect of a project, I get shot down with (what feels like) a thousand 'you're stupid to even try it, you stupid person you.'  Well, maybe not that bad, but bad enough.  So when I want to know how to build a medieval single pole pavilion or how to transform a broken sewing machine into a skill saw that will cut through plastic, wood and metal, I get shot down and told how stupid I am for not buying the thing in the first place.  That it's impossible to make these things without specialized equipment or skills.

And the worst thing about it...

... I start believing them.

It's not just one site, it's all over the internet.  Are all the people with the knowledge I seek, out there doing things, and the internet is simply populated with a congregation of cowards, too afraid to try something because it's not 'efficient' enough.  Surely trying anything would be more efficient than sitting at your keyboard all day telling people how foolish they are for attempting to do things.

I've come to realize two really important things:

1) I am not even remotely normal

and

2) the internet is terrible for my feeling of self worth.

I don't see what the problem is with spending 2 hours a day, every day, for months on end, working on a project just because I cannot find (or more often, afford) the tool I need to make the thing that I want to use.

Most people spend more time than that watching tv.

Maybe that's exactly my problem.

I just don't know.

What I do know however, is that I'm weird for wanting to make things instead of buy things.  It's unusual for a person to take a look at something that is broken and try to see how to make something totally different, yet functional from it.  I have strangeness in that I live a live very close to my values - the most influential one being to leave a place better than how I found it.  And, that I think better means more sustainable.  It's a quaint oddity that I make my own food from scratch, every meal, and that I do it on a budget.  These things I know.

On days like these, I wonder if it's me that needs to change, or would I be happier finding a mountain somewhere and setting up a hermitage?

I wonder, has my time blogging left the internet a better place than how I found it?
How can there be so many people out there, and yet feel so isolated?
I do not fit.

ps, sorry, I keep meaning to get some good photos of the converted sewing machine saw I made, but it's currently coated with sawdust and active projects.  I know, it's been simply ages since I tantalized you with the project, but here's a photo of some cards I made for weaving.

Really cool medieval tablet weaving.  I needed practice for an upcoming event, but didn't have any, so I used a banged up deck of cards and a hole punch.  Works great, but probably will wear out quite quickly.

There, I managed to end on a positive note.  More on the card weaving later.  I just need to find some motivation to pick up the camera and take some more photos for you.

Casting on

I picked up some yarn today and cast on.

Handspun alpaca from Herman

It's been a long time since I knitted, and I had forgotten how soothing it was to pass yarn between my hands.  It's really nice to work with the pointy sticks again.  I just hope my hands don't complain too much and I can't finish the project.  Having to limit myself to no more than 2 rows at a time.

gosling

Sorry about this.  I am well aware that this is becoming one of those annoying blogs that posts nothing but photos of cute animals... but I can't help it.  They are my life right now.

First off, lambs on their first outing with mum.

And that chicken finally hatched out her gosling.  The little baby's about 12 hours old and, well, the photos tell a good story.

First lambs on the farm

These are Icelandic sheep.  She's a real dedicated mum and has taken to both her lambs right away.

Chicken wanted to know what was going on.

and got told off by mum

They lamb out in the open, then spend  a few days in the mummy shelter (called a Jug), which is full of good things to eat and lots of lovely warm straw.

Hope you aren't getting board of these duckling photos yet

Had a cold snap here so I moved ducklings and mum to the greenhouse where they can be out of the wind.

Here's a mummy hen sitting on goose eggs.  She's in for a surprise in a few weeks.

"Mummy?  Are you my mummy?"

All together now "Awwwweeee"
They still haven't learnt to eat or drink yet, but mummy decided they needed to get out of the house for a while.  After sitting on those eggs for 45 days, can you blame her?

Joyful praise for the kitchen

This is what my kitchen looks like today and for the first time in months I feel joyful.

pasta sauce and maple syrup, true heaven.

sourdough bread in the oven

Shepherds pie, or a very close approximation.

I'll have a write up about them soon on my food blog, but what's most important is that I'm feeling glad to be cooking again.  Been a bit of a dark period for me the last couple of months, so hopeful this gladness will stick around for a while.

Having the kitchen to myself to create consumable works of art really makes a difference.   It inspires me in the most primal way.  How I love it.

Stars and yarn and stuff

Starting to recover form the cold/flu thing.  Self imposed quarenteen is lifted, and we are at low risk of spreading germs.

There are a lot of little things going on around the farm from the urgent need to build a new house for the ducks to sleep in before the monster vermin get back in the old duckhouse again and try to eat toes off my poor ducks again, to smoking bacon this afternoon.  The chickens need cleaning, the garden needs tending, ... lots of things.

Everything just piled up while we were sick.  Although there are a few good things that came of it.  We weren't feeling up to doing big jobs, so a lot of those little tasks that had been sitting around the house for months (yes, even years) got accomplished.

Other news on the health front, I finally got to see a specialist about my voice problem.  Been waiting almost 4 years for this appointment.  The specialist is somewhat optimistic that they can help, but may only be able to go so far before we have to find more doctors and more tests to find out the underlying cause.

Here's something extra special.  These handmade birch bark stars travelled all the way across the world and arrived at my house yesterday.  Thank you so much, they are beautiful.

I think I have a pen pal.  Time for me to pick up my pen and write back.

Another bit of good news.  I finally ordered the needles I need to get the knitting machine working.  The needles are still in the US.  They have travelled from Tenino, Washington state (just across the water from us) all the way to Los Angeles since the 9th of Jan.  I'm wondering if I should be worried that they are moving away from where I live and not towards me, but at least they are moving...?  But in some ways it's a good thing that they are taking a tour of the Western States while I get my *ahem together and finish some of these jobs on the farm that really need doing.

And other good news, Henny Penny is starting to feel better.  Not 100% yet, but definitely turned the corner   She's moved back in with her flock and is bossing everyone around as per normal.  But sometimes, you can see she hurts.  The vet says it's arthritis  so I might make her some special cinnamon cookies to try and get the inflammation down.  Just have to check if cinnamon is okay to feed chickens in large doses or not.

Sorry for this being one of those random update posts, but I'm still trying to get my head together after this cold.

Got a Cough? Take the week off.

Got a Cough? Take the Week off.

Kind of catchy don't you think?  I don't know if I drempt it or if it is something put out by the local health authority  but there is some strong wisdom there.  It might have also been a dream, but I heard this is shaping up to be one of those really bad years for colds and flues.

We have a cold in the house, it's a real dozy.  Worst I've seen in years.

So please don't think I'm avoiding you.  We are just being selfish and keeping all the germs to ourselves.  They are mine!  All Mine!  You can't have any!

Not that we can actually take the week off.  The chickens would be very hungry if we did that.  But we can avoid people like (we have) the plague.

When we are feeling better we will return to the real world, maybe.  It's actually nice and quiet here these days - If you don't count the sneezing and coughing.

Crazy Christmas 2012

Been a crazy Christmas this year.  A friend's mother's neighbours  granddaughter got invited to stay at hour house by her aunt.  Admittedly this is a bit strange to us as we've never met our friend's mother's neighbour, her granddaughter or the granddaughter's aunt before... but differences in culture and langue means that we had a house guest.  Lucky for us, she turned out to be lovely and not some sort of psycho killing maniac after all.

One more dinner with a friend tonight and I can pack up the Holiday decorations.

I always try to put up the decorations as close to Christmas Eve as possible and fully intend to leave them up till 12th night.  But it never works out that way.  By New Years I'm more than ready to pack up the ornaments and call it the end of the festivities.

Oh, my friend just arrived at the door.  Got to go brush my teeth real quick.  Shouldn't have ate all that garlic for lunch.

Happy Holidays everyone.

Holiday decoration

I'm not one to go all out for The Holidays; however, I do enjoy a good feast.  Now that my usual holiday gathering is full of kids as well as adults, I thought why not have a bit of fun decorating.

Fancy Mochi New Years thing,
plus fruit and nuts to help make the display a bit more festive.

A small toy or book for each kid, plus some small token for each adult.  That plus a feast is enough to make The Holidays special without too much stress.

Shiny star for the top of my tree
Usually for the holidays I gather green branches that got blown down in the wind and use them to make some decorations, and then cut some holly berries and bright yellow willow branches and maybe some bright red dogwood for colour.  But this year I found a myrtle tree at the nursery.  I couldn't resist.  Myrtle is associated with everlasting friendship and for keeping away the black death.
